How Do I Clean My Shower?

Let’s say you have been in business for about 20 years running a tile, grout and stone cleaning company— repairing grout and dealing with problematic floor issues . At Groutastic, we have definitely been asked many questions over those 20 years . I am going to say one of the most common questions is “How do I clean my shower?”.

The short answer is: maybe not the way you have been cleaning your shower. Now, shower cleaning can include the tile, stone or grout on your walls, but can also include acrylic wall panels.

As your shower gets used daily,  you should keep in mind that showers are often used by multiple people in your home. That daily showering turns into a good amount of yearly usage. If you consider showers should last about 20-30 years, based on our own experience— you are talking about a few hundred, if not thousands of showers a year. That is a lot of potential for discoloring your grout and creating build up on your tile.

Okay, so showers get a lot of usage, now what? Well most households will turn to common cleaning products to clean their tile and grout. But are your common cleaning products really what you need to maintain your tile and grout?  Consider this, everytime you shower you are using some type of body soap, shampoo and some might even use conditioner. Could these daily body cleaning products also be cleaning your shower or they are the reason you have grout discoloration and build up on your tile and grout?

As you use these products they are splashing all over your shower walls and shower controls. Soaps and conditioners are clinging to your tile and grout, metal shower fixtures and basically everything in your shower.

Once they build up, you start to notice the discoloration they bring to your tile and grout. You then use the “common cleaning products” to remedy this situation. And some of these products, if used correctly, can help reverse your situation.

But what if you never get into this situation? What if you never get that build up from the start?

What we have always suggested and continue to suggest to our customer is not only to squeegee your walls down, but also, after every single shower,  to use your handheld shower and actually rinse your shower walls down!

Yes, at the end of your shower take that handheld shower wand, turn it on and rinse.

Start at the top of the tile and grout wall in your shower.

Rinse all the body soaps, shampoos and conditioners off the walls.

Rinse them right down that drain. This one single move in your shower can save you a ton of future issues with tile build up and grout discoloration issues. Now this is not going to solve any hard water situation, nor is this going to reverse any current issues you have, but this should be your #1 way that you clean your shower.

And this cleaning technique should be implemented immediately.

We hope this helps with your shower maintenance!  As always, Groutastic and Pavertastic offers free estimates and that free estimate comes with our outstanding customer service
